ode to the machine
DESIGN CHALLENGE
After reading Typewriter Man, a editorial piece published in The Atlantic in 1997, we had to conceptually map the narrative in order to organize an exhibition. This project focused on limited space in order to construct a narrative. We were tasked with the Akeley Corridor located at the American Museum of Natural History, a 500-square foot hallway. This was our first challenge of collecting actual artifacts and images for our idea and utilizing them for specific purposes throughout the exhibition.
This project also allowed us to focus on creating a consistent graphic hierarchy within the space, based on typographic choices, as well as color. As with all of our projects, it enabled us to continue practicing scaled elevations. Similarly to other projects that we complete, it required that each week we progressed with our designs, as we participated in design critiques.

THE FINAL CONCEPT
As part of our concept mapping, and because of the limited space, we had to create a concise narrative surrounding the story. Because of the central character of the story and the historical significance, I chose to focus on elements of the story that centralized the typewriter's use within the World Wars. The overall look and feel became a "mid-century buddy"; your trusty old friend with a modern pop. The overall colors were warm, with a blue contrast. Because many of the images were black and white, I treated them with this same color scheme to further this impression.
